Intuition & Interoception: Learning to Trust Your Body’s Inner Signals

Writer: Joanna Augusta LesterJoanna Augusta Lester

Have you ever had a gut feeling about a person, a place, or a decision—something you couldn’t quite explain but felt deep inside? Or maybe you’ve walked into a room and, without any logical reason, felt an urge to leave? These experiences are more than just instincts or hunches; they are your body’s way of speaking to you, long before your mind catches up. This is the wisdom of your nervous system at work.

Our bodies are constantly gathering and processing information through a process called interoception, or the ability to sense internal signals. This can include noticing your heartbeat quicken before you even recognize you’re anxious, feeling a lump in your throat before you understand you’re holding back emotion, or experiencing a sense of ease in the presence of someone who feels safe. Learning to tune into these signals is a powerful skill—one that can help you navigate life with greater awareness, clarity, and self-trust.

Somatic Intuition: The Language of the Body

We often think of intuition as something mystical, but in reality, it’s deeply rooted in the body’s physiological responses. Somatic intuition refers to the body’s ability to detect patterns and communicate information faster than the thinking mind. It’s why you might know you need to leave a relationship before you can articulate why, or why a particular job opportunity just doesn’t sit right with you.

Our nervous system constantly scans for cues of safety or danger—what’s known in polyvagal theory as neuroception—and this influences our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in ways we might not even realize. When we honor these signals, we can make choices that align with our well-being. When we ignore or suppress them, however, they don’t just disappear; they tend to manifest in other ways—chronic tension, fatigue, digestive issues, or emotional overwhelm.

Nervous System Literacy: Learning to Trust the Signals

Becoming literate in your own nervous system’s language means learning to recognize and interpret its messages. It’s the difference between reacting unconsciously and responding with intention.

Here are some accessible ways to start developing nervous system literacy:

  • Notice patterns: Do certain environments, people, or experiences consistently leave you feeling drained or anxious? Where do you feel that in your body?

  • Track your ‘yes’ and ‘no’ responses: Think of a time when you felt deeply aligned with a situation—maybe a job opportunity, a friendship, or a place you visited. How did your body feel? Now, recall a time when something felt deeply wrong or misaligned. What signals did your body give you?

  • Experiment with small decisions: The next time you need to make a decision—what to eat, where to go, whether to engage in a conversation—pause and check in with your body. Does it feel expansive or contracted? Open or tight?

Your Body Has the Final Say

One of the most empowering realizations in healing is that, no matter how much we try to override, rationalize, or dismiss our body’s signals, they don’t go away. They simply find another way to be heard. Whether through physical symptoms, emotional dysregulation, or burnout, the body ultimately has the final say. Learning to listen early can prevent long-term distress and cultivate a deep sense of inner alignment.

That said, learning to trust your body is a process. If you’ve spent years overriding or disconnecting from its signals—due to trauma, social conditioning, or cultural messaging—it can feel overwhelming to start tuning in. Be gentle with yourself. Learning this language takes time, and every moment of listening is a step toward deeper self-trust and healing.

Reflection: How Does Your Body Speak to You?

  • Can you recall a time when your body signaled something to you before your mind caught up?

  • What are some physical cues you notice when you feel safe, aligned, or excited? How about when something feels off?

  • If you were to begin listening to your body more deeply today, what’s one small way you could start?

Your body holds wisdom beyond what words can capture. By honoring its messages, you step into a more empowered, intuitive, and connected version of yourself—one where you move through life with greater ease, trust, and self-awareness.
